Dinasaur tracks and star gazing
Clayton Lake State Park near Clayton, New Mexico turned out to be a pleasant surprise. It is a small state park with several small camogrounds spread around the reservoir which is popular for fishing. Our campground had about a half dozen sites overlooking the lake. The opportunity to see dinasaur tracks and attend star parties make this park unique. The campground host is an amateur astronomer who regularly hosts very well-attendedstar parties. Water and electric were available at our campsite, but the park does not have a dump station.

More Than Dinosaur Tracks
Stopped here to see the dinosaur tracks and they didn’t disappoint. Lots of tracks and interpretive signs. Well worth the stop and then we took the nature hike and saw migrating hawks, turkeys, deer and two bald eagles. Quite the bonus. The bathrooms would have been nice if they hadn’t been trashed by campers, something we’ve seen at several campgrounds. New Mexico campgrounds are some of the best and I’m saddened by this treatment by other campers.

Pretty Lakeside Spots
3 nights, April 9,10,11, 2021
Site #7 level, no need to adjust.
Small park, clean and quiet. Reservations required. Not a lot to do after you have seen the dinosaur foot prints. Great place to relax. Limited space for RVs, but there seems to be more tent areas. Water and Electric at each site in Electric CG. No dump station. Truck stop in town charges $10 to dump.

Amazing
This is one of the most unique and cost-effective places to visit. Great walks and dinosaur tracks, rock formations. Tent campers can enjoy the most spectacular of the sites set amid the rocks. Pictures do not do this place justice.
