Stay 7 Nights
Bring some ant protection or buy the diatomaceous earth from the rangers, you're gonna need it. Ants everywhere and they like RVs. 70 bucks a night plus an additional 8+ if you register online. Way high price. No free shower here either. Road noise? You bet. The road next to the campground is like a raceway for motorcycles, especially at night and i5 constant buzz a mile below. Camp Pendleton has constant practice gun and artillery fire all day. And watch out for e bike speedsters because they aren't looking out for you.

36 Feet Trailer
I’m showing up and hope San Mateo camping won’t turn me around. The web site says 36 feet max so that is what I’m going on

Nice Spot
Nice place. Clean bathrooms/showers. Nice people, no riffraff. The walk to the Beach is kind of far and not really kid friendly but a short drive to San Clemente beach much better for kids. No Verizon coverage. Tight spots, might be hard for bigger trailers and no sewer hookup.

No Verizon Service
I don't know if other carriers reach here, but with Verizon I could text only. I could not get a strong enough signal to hotspot my computer and get any work done.
For $40 without hookups, I was surprised I had to get tokens to take a shower. I didn't see where to buy these so just used my RV shower in instead.

Clean And Quiet
Stayed here for a few days. The bathrooms are very well kept and the sites are clean. Makes for a great base camp for exploring Orange and San Diego counties.
Make sure to do what you need to do to prevent ants from crawling up your stabilizers. There is evidence of heavy use of powder at nearly all the sites.

San Mateo
Great place to camp. Super clean bathrooms and sowers. Showers last longer than you would think, so start with 2 tokens than add as needed- water is nice and hot. The 1.5 mile hike has a couple of steep hills, so it's good if you are in shape and like a good hike. Beach is beautiful- lots of surfing. Fishing wasn't that great - not sure of it was all the boulders or just our timing . Kids can ride bikes and goof around the camp area. Not much else for them to see or do. Carl's Jr. Can be reached by the car, or making part of that hike.

Hidden secret, clean and abundant bathroom with showers. Semi-private back in spaces. Closed to military facilities and down town San Clemente. Great place.

Nice Campground.
San Mateo campground. Nice campground. Kept rather clean. Many bathrooms and showers. Just don't expect to see or hear the beach. You are about 1.5 miles inland. You also hear the guns going off from Camp Pendleton. Not too loud. Sort of muffled. Short drive to beach and your camp pass allows you to park at other camp sites on the beach.
