Great 1st Day Stop

Happily stopped at Chabot end of 1st day. Gorgeous location on top of the mtn. Beautiful views from almost every site. Curvey entrance/exit roads from the south not bad, the north worse. I would backtrack the southern road even if going north. Bring levelers if RV or car camping. Nice space between sites. Eucalyptus trees cover the campground. Restroom #2 outdated and electric not working. Great hikes but lots of up/down. Lake views, bay views, mtn views. Rangers helpful and accomodating. Recommend reservations. It's very popular.

Love This Place

We have been coming here for years and it never dissapoints. If you in a MH like us be sure to call ahead for the full hookups as they only have a few. But rest assured your stay will be peaceful and relaxed. Its our go to place while in the bay area.

Hidden Gem

On a recent road trip, I had reservations to tour the Tesla factory. I found this park on Trip Advisor...and what a find. It was convenient to Tesla and also convenient to visit the John Muir National Historical Site. The park is like an oasis in the Bay Area. Very nice sites surrounded by eucalyptus trees. Numerous hiking/biking trails with some spectacular views. I was driving my Winnebago Navion, pulling my Smart car and had no problem climbing the hills. Be advised that you’re not allowed to enter the park before the check in time of 2pm. Located off of Redwood Road. Had a special treat of wild turkeys hanging around my RV. Only negative thing I could say was that the water pressure was low.

So when the other reviewer said “up a hill”, that’s no joke. We started up in our 31 foot Motorhome and a tow car (yeah, not a good idea) and after we unhooked the car it got better. The RV spots are huge and have FHU... the TENT sites, maybe not. The park itself is really pretty, but I give it 3 stars cuz of the drive and the vast fields of poison oak surrounding the sites. Oh yeah, and the tick warnings, thought I didn’t actually see or have to deal with any. $39 for our spot last night.

Great Place!

We came with a MH and tow car; with no reservation ( Thou I do not recommend it) we thought the park was closer and that it was kind of a city RV park, we started heading up the mountains to an amazing place. In the middle of the city, all the other places are in the middle of the city, crowded, expensive with awful customer service. Here even when we came with no reservation they show willingness to help, very kind and friendly staff, pets fee 2usd per day, all except cable and wifi (but we did not came looking for that just mentioned for those who need to work). Great space, picnic and grill area for each space. At 10pm the entrance is closed but your visitors or you can leave anytime. Definitely we will come back to this park each time that we came to San Francisco.

Tent Campground

The park is a nice tent park. They say its for RVs but thats not really true. Spots are small and tight getting into. No hookups or generator use. When I asked how you keep the battery's charged in a rv I was told "it's a campground" . Geezzzzzz. I spent a week at a time with no hookups in national parks and they allowed generator usage 6 hrs a day at certain times.

Beautiful Campground

It's very pretty here. As you drive the twisty, winding road into the heart of this park you will see redwood trees, views of San Francisco, hillsides and the lake in the park. When you get to the campground you are in a grove of eucalyptus trees. It's about 30 min from anything (Oakland) but well worth it. If you have a trailer or motorhome be sure to drive through the campground and find a site you will fit into and allows for turns when backing in. There are a couple of pull - through sites. The full hook up sites are near the entrance to the campground but they are far enough away. Nice staff, clean facilities. Fee seemed reasonable. You can reserve a site in advance and they do book up. We were here mid-May and they had sites available but on the weekend it was full.

A Convenient Homebase

This is a large campground in the Oakland Hills. You can hike down to the lake or into the hills. We use it as a homebase when visiting the bay area, but it is reserved months ahead for every summer weekend. There are only a few utility sites. It isnt that great but its your only choice in the whole East Bay. Watch out for the poison oak!
